Watford is recognized as a significant sub-regional center by the Hertfordshire County Council.

Located on the Grand Union Canal, the Colne and Gade Rivers, and the northwestern edge of London, Watford is a town and municipality (district) in the official and civil county of Hertfordshire, England. It was designated as an urban district under the Local Government Act of 1894 and was given the charter to become a municipal borough in 1922.

Garston, Watford North, and Watford Junction are the three nearby rail stations. The Watford - Aldgate section of the Metro Line has a stop at Watford that is also accessible by subway, with services departing every ten minutes.

For motorists, Watford is conveniently adjacent to the M1 (which connects London to the Midlands, Northern England) and the M25 London Orbital Motorway, the two primary routes in and out of London. There is also the Watford Ring Road, which reduces traffic while connecting all areas of Watford.

Watford is best visited on foot, though. There are numerous walking paths to explore the town and its surroundings. Another choice is cycling, and there are over 215 cycle routes accessible.
